Faith is an important part of family life, and parents want to pass on an understanding of the Catholic faith to their children, especially by attending weekly Mass. For younger children, however, the experience can sometimes feel challenging. Being asked to sit still, stay quiet, and listen to unfamiliar words can make it difficult for them to fully engage. At the same time, parents often find themselves tending to their children rather than being able to enter deeply into the liturgy. What if there were a way for children in preschool through first grade to experience the gospel and readings in a way that allowed them to understand a little better?
Parents, your prayers may be answered! Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) offers a thoughtful and welcoming solution. Held during the 9:00 a.m. Mass on select Sundays throughout the year, CLOW is designed for children ages 4–6 (preschool through first grade), providing them with an opportunity to encounter the Gospel and readings in a way that is accessible, engaging, and meaningful.
“We do everything they do in the ‘big church,’” explains Jackie Kelly, coordinator of the CLOW ministry. “CLOW mirrors what happens during Mass, but in a way that is focused on the children. The resources we use allow us to explore the readings and discuss them in a way that makes sense for their age. It helps make the Word of God feel more approachable and honestly, sometimes even less intimidating for me too.”
The heart of CLOW is creating a space where children can actively and consciously participate in celebrating the liturgy. Through storytelling, discussion, music, and prayer, they are invited to be more than silent spectators; they are encouraged to be curious, have fun, and simply be themselves.
“The ministry creates an environment where kids can experience the Liturgy of the Word in a joyful way,” Jackie shares. “They’re encouraged to wonder, to sing, and to be curious. And yes, sometimes we get a little distracted and a little loud, but that’s all part of the beauty of it. It’s truly a privilege to walk alongside them in their faith journey. I don’t do this because I have something to teach them, but because there is so much to learn from them. It’s an incredible blessing.”
On days when CLOW is offered, families will notice a banner displayed near the altar. Prior to the first reading, the presider invites children to come forward to the front of the altar for a blessing, after which they process together for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. While the program is tailored for younger children ages 4,5 and 6, parents, siblings, and any child who feels called to participate are always welcome.
The children return to the sanctuary at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, as part of the offertory procession. It is a powerful and visible reminder of their place within the parish community.
“We didn’t always bring the children back in this way,” Jackie notes. “I’m so grateful that Jim Wahl, our Liturgy Director, introduced this change. It’s such a beautiful way to recognize the incredible gift these children are to our community.”
CLOW goes far beyond helping children understand the Mass; it is an opportunity for them to encounter God’s love.
“By offering a program specifically designed for children, we give them the opportunity to build a meaningful connection with the liturgy, which hopefully becomes a strong foundation for their relationship with God as they grow,” she explains. “My hope is that as they explore the richness of our Catholic faith, they feel inspired to continue deepening that relationship throughout their lives.
More than anything, I hope they come to know that they are deeply loved by God—that this love is unconditional and freely given, and that each of us is worthy just as we are. So often, as we navigate life’s challenges, we lose sight of the wonder around us and forget that life itself is a gift born from God’s unconditional love for each of us individually. Children, though, still see that wonder. They have a natural faith and an ability to love without judgment—it comes from within them. They seem to recognize not only the structure of what God has created, but the deeper presence within it. It’s incredible to witness, and it’s probably what has kept me doing this work for so long.”
CLOW is not only a gift for children, but also for families and the broader parish community. Jackie herself began her journey simply by attending with her daughter.
“It was such a meaningful way for us to connect and grow in our faith together,” she shares.
As our St. Francis faith family continues to grow, so does the need for resources to help support ministries such as CLOW. “It’s not a huge time commitment—about 20 to 30 minutes,” Jackie explains. “But it has a lasting impact. I encourage anyone who feels called to help continue this work to reach out. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for our Teen Shepherds, especially those who may have busy schedules during the week, to get involved.”
