When looking at the comprehensive faith formation program available at St. Francis, some parents may not realize how soon the program begins. As the first teachers of the Faith, parents are essential in teaching their children prayers and the importance of Mass. However, very young children can find Mass challenging to follow and understand. That’s where Cross Step can support parents in introducing their children to the Faith!
Cross Step is our preschool ministry, serving children ages one and walking through age 4. Class meets during the 9:00 am Sunday Mass about twice a month to give our youngest parishioners a joyful introduction to the Catholic faith. As coordinator of the Cross Step program, Amy Daley is enthusiastic about their program: “Through Bible stories, crafts, and guided play, we help children begin to know Jesus and experience His love in a way that makes sense for their age. We hope that each child leaves Cross Step feeling loved, welcomed, and excited to learn about God.”
Cross Step is rooted in Catholic identity. “We focus on introducing Scripture, prayer, the liturgical seasons, and virtues like kindness, sharing, and respect,” says Amy, adding, “We want the children to see faith not just as something they learn about, but something they live. The program models Franciscan hospitality by creating a space where every child feels seen and valued, and where parents receive support in their role as primary faith educators.”
Cross Step also reflects the parish’s tradition of service. Parents of enrolled children serve as classroom volunteers, and we warmly welcome volunteers from the wider parish community. If you love preschool-aged children, spend an hour with them! You’ll find it is incredible to witness their joy and curiosity, and there’s the added benefit that it will renew your faith too.
Cross Step is more than childcare; it’s an experience of belonging, love, and early discipleship. “Through the laughter of play, the wonder of Scripture, and the care of our volunteers,” says Amy, “we are planting seeds of faith that will grow for years to come.” Children attending Cross Step spend the faith-filled hour with trained, responsible childcare workers and volunteers, who are excited to help your children take their first steps in their walk with God!
