“At St. Francis, we believe that living out our Catholic faith means more than attending Mass,” says Anne-Marie Summers, coordinator of the Catholic Parish Outreach (CPO) Food Drive, “it means putting our faith into action, especially for those in need.” The CPO Food Drive, a ministry that not only feeds the hungry but also strengthens our shared identity as a parish rooted in service, compassion, and community, is an excellent example of this ‘action.’
The CPO Food Drive is a coordinated effort led by parishioners to collect and deliver food to families in our area who are struggling to make ends meet. Volunteers help by distributing collection bags after Mass, sorting donations, transporting goods to the Catholic Parish Center, and spreading awareness throughout the parish. “It is a hands-on ministry with an immediate impact,” adds Anne-Marie, “each can, box, and bag donated reflects the generosity and spirit of our St. Francis community.” The CPO food drive is a fantastic way to live out our Catholic faith.
“Jesus calls us to feed the hungry and care for our neighbors,” Anne-Marie points out, “and this is one way we can do that together. It is also a reminder that our faith is active, not just something we keep inside.” She emphasizes that helping others is a form of prayer as well. “You just need to be willing to give a little time and love to live Christ’s commandment to ‘feed the hungry’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself ’; it is not just about what happens inside the church building, it’s about how we treat others outside of it, too.”
It is through ministries like the CPO Food Drive that we show the larger community what being part of St. Francis is all about. “Whether you are dropping off a few canned goods or helping coordinate the drive, you are part of something bigger,” says Anne-Marie. “That kind of service sends a strong message of hope and compassion.” She emphasizes the ease of helping out through CPO: “If you have been thinking about volunteering, this is a great place to start. It’s easy to jump in, and there’s something for everyone. There is no experience required, just a willing heart and a few hours of your time.”
You can start small by helping to distribute grocery bags after Mass, bringing donations, or signing up to help collect goods on one or two of the few weekends the collection takes place during the year. She says, “You will meet great people, feel more connected to the parish, and make a real difference in someone’s life. It is a special way to get your kids or family involved, too. My children and grandchildren valued the experiences they have had collecting the donations and organizing them in the CPO truck.” Are you seeking an opportunity to deepen your faith and serve those in need within our greater Raleigh community?
