Hidden Figures

Sometimes we take for granted how well things work at St. Francis of Assisi. Everything flows relatively smoothly, especially given the number of ministries supported here. How does that happen? Who are the people who, behind the scenes, make it all come together and work so well?

One of the ‘hidden figures’ bringing it all together is Shannon Hoffman, Administrative Assistant for Pastoral Ministries. “In my role,” she says, “I help support our priests by coordinating their schedules, arranging meetings, assisting with requests for sacraments, preparing Mass intentions, and organizing the Prayers of the Faithful. Outlook and Excel are my go-to programs for keeping everything organized and running smoothly each day.” She also directly supports specific directors in their roles. “I support the Director of Liturgy & Music (Jim Wahl) and the Director of Engagement and Development (Stacey Shine) with a variety of ongoing administrative needs. Whether it’s preparing materials, coordinating communication, or helping manage recurring weekly and monthly responsibilities, I work to make sure they have what they need so they can focus on their ministries.”

Stacey Shine, mentioned by Shannon, is the Director of Engagement and Development, but is also someone who works behind the scenes. “I have the privilege of creating, planning, and executing many of the parish-wide initiatives that help shape our community life at St. Francis,” she says. “I work directly with parishioners, new and longtime, guiding them as they become involved in the ministries and activities that best support their spiritual journey. I also help them navigate key parish platforms, including ParishSOFT for online giving and Realm for events, registration, and communication. Much of my work involves taking an idea or need within the parish and building it into a well-organized experience that serves our community. With a small team of staff and volunteers, I oversee the logistics, communication, and implementation of some of our major events throughout the year.”

While Shannon and Stacey are known by many, the specific responsibilities of their roles may not be. They are certainly not ‘out front’ like the priests, Jim Wahl, or the leaders of our schools, and that’s ok with them. “Behind the scenes, I manage many essential responsibilities that help keep our parish life vibrant and well-coordinated,” Stacey says.“I develop, plan, and execute events such as the NEW Wellness Fair we will have in January, the Ministry Fair, the Day of Reflection, and our annual  Franciscan Spirit and Life Convocation, each designed to address the spiritual, practical, or relational needs of our parishioners. I also collaborate closely with our creative partner, Jenny Hammond, to prepare our annual editorial calendar, shaping how we tell our parish story and how we communicate engagement opportunities throughout the year. These efforts ensure that our messaging is consistent, intentional, and aligned with St. Francis’s mission.”

Shannon adds, “Many of my most important responsibilities happen behind the scenes. From preparing documents to maintaining schedules, ordering necessary supplies, and ensuring small but essential details don’t get overlooked. My goal is to support the priests and directors with the little things so they can carry out their work effectively.” However, that doesn’t mean she isn’t involved with parishioners each day. “I truly enjoy meeting new people every day. While the needs of those who call or visit are often similar, their stories are unique, and I appreciate the chance to connect with them as individuals. Being a friendly face and a calming presence for those who are anxious, grieving, or seeking guidance is meaningful to me. It’s a privilege to accompany people in those moments, even in small ways.”

As with many parish employees, faith is an essential component of their work. “My faith is at the heart of how I approach my work here at St. Francis,” emphasizes Shannon. “Even though my responsibilities are administrative, I view my role as a ministry of service, one that supports our priests, our directors, and ultimately the life and mission of our parish community. My faith guides how I interact with others, helping me serve with patience, compassion, and a sense of purpose.”

Stacey agrees, saying, “My faith plays a significant role in how I approach my responsibilities. Working in a Catholic parish allows me to integrate the values of hospitality, stewardship, and discipleship into my daily work. I see my ministry as one of connection; helping people feel welcomed, supported, and spiritually grounded. The Franciscan charism, especially its focus on service, compassion, and meeting people where they are, guides my decisions and interactions. It inspires me to create programs and events that foster community, deepen faith, and make people feel at home.”

“What I enjoy most about my role is the direct connection I have with our parishioners,” continues Stacey. “Every event, conversation, and initiative offers a chance to help someone take a step deeper into their faith or into parish life. I also value the collaborative spirit of our staff across all departments: Liturgy, Justice and Peace, Formation, Finance, and others, who work together to support a thriving, welcoming parish community. She adds, “This parish is truly home for my family and me. I raised my children here, and I have experienced firsthand the warmth, generosity, and resilience of this community. There is a unique Franciscan spirit at St. Francis, an energy rooted in compassion, hospitality, and service to one another. Being able to contribute to this mission and help others feel that same sense of belonging is both an honor and a blessing.”

Shannon finds motivation in the parish’s mission fulfillment through her work and that of all staff members. “I’m inspired by the way this parish strives to live out the values of our patron saint. Every day, the parish office becomes a place where people come seeking comfort, direction, healing, or simply a sense of belonging. Often, we are the first point of contact for someone who is grieving or carrying a heavy burden. I value the opportunity to offer warmth, understanding, and welcome to those who may feel lost. Knowing I can be a small source of peace for someone deeply motivates me.”

The staff and faculty of the parish and schools strive every day to make St. Francis of Assisi the special place it is for so many. At this time of year, especially, it is important to remember all that they do, whether very publicly or behind the scenes, to make St. Francis of Assisi the bedrock of service and Catholic compassion in North Raleigh. Many thanks to you all for all that you do!
