This weekend is our kickoff for the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Our goal for this year is $509,000, which is the same as last year’s goal. Last year was our best year ever for the BAA– though we fell just short of our goal, we did raise $480,000, our highest amount ever. Funds for the BAA support many worthy projects for the Diocese of Raleigh, including Catholic Charities which provides needed services for so many people who might otherwise be forgotten. We friars pledge to the BAA every year, and we once again ask you to consider making a pledge as this year’s appeal begins. As always, thank you for your generosity!
Next week we begin Catholic Schools Week. Sometimes during the week, I walk around our campus and I’ll encounter our preschool kids on the playground, running and playing; and our elementary and middle school students throwing footballs (and I will sometimes ask to throw one myself, a throwback to my own days on the playground); and an overall sense of energy and life all around. Once a month we have mass for the whole school in the main church and from the presider’s chair it is an amazing sight – a full church, and a beautiful spirit. If you are considering either preschool or elementary/middle school, please consider attending our school open houses to be held on Sunday, January 27, after the 11:30 Mass.
You may have heard that back in October, Fr. Thomas Keating died at the age of 95 at St. Joseph’s Monastery in Spencer MA. Keating was a Trappist priest best known for his work on centering prayer. In an article about Keating, a person writes about going to him for confession, and confessing that he was struggling to trust in these times of fear and violence and division. Keating answered him this way: “Focus on trust. When you trust that we are all part of something beautiful beyond our wildest imagination, you will find healing.” What would it be like if we all spent some time meditating on those words this week?
Finally, a reminder that pastor’s fireside chat, with special guest appearance by Director of Stewardship Deb Royals-Mizerk, begins Tuesday evening January 22 at 6:45pm by the fireplace in the gathering space.
Blessings on your week!
