An update on a few things as we enter these days of summer….you may recall we conducted a parish survey back in November and since that time, we have been taking a deeper look at our parish and addressing some of what we learned through the survey. One thing we learned is that we need to find new and better ways to communicate our parish finances. The total annual budget for the entire St. Francis parish, which includes the church, the school, the preschool, and the columbarium, is more than $13 million.
As our new fiscal year begins on July 1, we are planning in the coming months a way to communicate how it all adds up. Watch this space for details. And thank you to all who so generously help to support St. Francis along the way.
At the end of July our parish staff is taking a few days away at St. Francis Springs in Stoneville NC to talk in more depth about the parish, what we see, and what we might further imagine for St. Francis. One event that came from the staff itself: on Saturday, September 29, we are planning a Franciscan convocation, a day held aside for everyone to learn more about the saint from Assisi and what he means for our world today. Again, watch this space in the coming weeks for details.
We were reminded in the past weeks of the fragility of human life with news of the celebrity deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, two people who seemed to have “it all” and yet, behind that success, a lurking depression. Among the tributes to Mr. Bourdain was one from former President Obama, who remembered a dinner with him in Vietnam in 2016, and who wrote about “low plastic stools, cheap but delicious noodles, cold Hanoi beer. This is how I’ll remember Tony. He taught us about food – but most importantly about its ability to bring us together. To make us a little less afraid of the unknown…” Something gospel-like about that, in its own secular way.
And finally, a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Blessings on your week!
