The issue of immigration reform remains front and center of our advocacy this month. The Church has asked us to take action on the urgent need for passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill.
Over the last few weeks, we at St. Francis of Assisi have been trying to do our part. We were able to host Theodore Cardinal McCarrick on a talk about the Church’s teaching related to immigration and the piece of legislation being debated in the Senate and House. You can watch this address here. We signed postcards and sent them to our local legislators. This is the third time we have done this. In the last couple weeks, we have also had the opportunity to speak directly to Rep. David Price (D-NC 4th district) and Rep. George Holding (R-NC 13th district) about this issue from the perspective of Catholic social teaching. We would encourage you to continue to reach out to your legislators during this pivotal time in the debate. You can send an on-line postcard here.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 8, 2013, the Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge called on Catholics in the Diocese of Raleigh to join him in calling on members of the House of Representatives to take action on the urgent need for passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill. The statement was issued at the conclusion of a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated at the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary in Wilmington. Pointing to the U.S. Senate’s passage of a comprehensive reform bill in June, S-744, Bishop Burbidge said, while the proposed legislation is not perfect, it is one that he and his brother bishops can support. He urged the faithful in the Diocese to contact their U.S. House members to support immigration reform legislation that “while protecting our borders, provides for legalization of those undocumented in our country.” To watch or read his statement, click here.
Also, Bishop Burbidge will be among the leaders representing different religious traditions and civic organizations in North Carolina on Sunday, September 15 at a Delegates Assembly to Support Immigration Reform, beginning at 3:15 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 810 W. Chapel Hill St., Durham, NC, sponsored by NC Latino Coalition and Durham CAN. Representatives David Price and GK Butterfield will also be in attendance and will be asked to make a public commitment supporting Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
