Our mission is to help homeless families achieve independent living by providing lodging, meals, and childcare in times of transition and need. We also strive to promote awareness and action from our parish family regarding homelessness.
Four times a year homeless families come and find a home on the St. Francis parish campus. Currently the WIHN families are staying in LaVerna Center, a beautiful and comfortable setting.
Help us make the LaVerna Center a welcoming home for these families by donating:
- Rectangular tablecloths to set an attractive and welcoming table
- Towels, bathmats for the bathrooms, and kitchen dishtowels
- DVDs that your children are no longer watching. All age DVDs are appropriate from young children to teens
- Rocking chairs or other outside chairs for the porches to help the families relax after working or looking for work while juggling the demands of childcare.
There are many ways volunteers can help:
- Bring and/or serve hot, nutritious meals each night
- Provide childcare for small children
- Be an overnight host to maintain safety
- Drive the WIHN van to pick up the families from downtown or return them to the WIHN center in the morning
- Wash laundry at the end of the week.
It is an honor and a privilege to open our doors and our hearts to these families in need.
St. Francis will be hosting families during the remainder of 2010 in May, September, and November. Check out the parish bulletin and/or website for more details as each hosting approaches.
