We received word here at St. Francis a week ago that Fr. Jim English, S.J., the founding pastor of this parish, died on Friday, July 22, 2016 at a Jesuit retirement house in Philadelphia. After the masses last weekend, I heard from a number of people who remembered him and his time here. He was here as pastor in the early 1980’s, in the days before there was any church building at all, when mass was celebrated in people’s homes in the area. Fr. David McBriar succeeded Jim as pastor in 1987 and David was the first Franciscan pastor of this parish.
I had phone messages about Jim’s death from Jesuits in Philadelphia and Washington and also from Jim’s brother in New York, asking us to remember him in our prayers. May he rest in peace.
This weekend I am spending time in New Hampshire and in the Boston area with family and friends, looking forward to paddling a kayak around Lovell Lake and going to Pepe’s Pizza in Chestnut Hill, MA with my two brothers, on the recommendation of my middle brother, who raves about it.
Thank you to Fr. Larry Anderson who has been with us these past two weeks helping out.
This coming Tuesday evening, August 2, we invite you to join us in a prayer service for peace, “Lord, Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace” to be held in our chapel. The service begins at 7:00pm.
Blessings on your week!
