Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the past week, there have been heartbreaking stories and pictures from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan, the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 195 miles per hour. The typhoon slammed into the Philippines on the island of Samar the evening of November 7, and hit Vietnam on Sunday, November 9. The storm has killed an estimated 10,000 people, and local officials report approximately 10 million people have been affected.  There are concerns about significant loss  of life, and there are reports of many of the hardest hit areas being without water, food, electricity, housing, and other needed supplies. This weekend a second collection is being taken up to provide assistance to those most in need.

Thank you for your generosity for people impacted far from us as well as those close to us. In recent weeks I’ve received letters of appreciation for our generous outreach from the following organizations:

Thank you for your donation to the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. It is through the generosity of people like you that we are able to provide a home away from home for critically ill children and their families. We appreciate your support!  Ronald McDonald House, Durham

The Center for Volunteer Caregiving gratefully acknowledges St. Francis of Assisi’s gift. It is through the generosity of congregations like yours that we are able to continue providing assistance to older adults and adults with disabilities throughout Wake county. Your gift does make a difference. Thank you so much for your continued partnership and this timely contribution!  The Center for Volunteer Caregiving

You’re a hero to us!  Your generous gift to Stop Hunger Now is making a difference in someone’s life right now. Thank you for your generosity  in allowing us to offer hope to those who hunger for human dignity through these and many other worthwhile organizations that we partner with as we seek to be faithful to our mission to proclaim the reign of God. Let us continue to pray for all those who are in need.

In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Mark
