Dear Brothers and Sisters,

With personal sadness and yet great hope in our faith in the resurrection, we mourn the death of Bishop Joe Gossman, a great shepherd of our diocese for 31 years. Next week we will have a tribute to him in our bulletin.

Welcome to Cardinal McCarrick, retired archbishop of Washington, who visits us this weekend. Please join in a reception and talk in Clare Fellowship Hall following the 11:30 am Mass. Cardinal McCarrick will speak about immigration from the Church’s perspective. He is a fascinating man and a great storyteller. All are welcome to come and enjoy and learn from his presentation, which will begin at 1:00 pm.

Over the summer many varied projects have been taking place to keep our campus in good shape. Below is an update from Ben Whitehouse, Director of Operations:

Thank you for your stewardship in funding the following facilities maintenance and improvements:

-The church sound system replacement is well under way with the new wireless module in place this weekend and the completed system planned for the Feast of Francis in October.

-The church campus (except Elizabeth Hall) exterior power washing, wood repair, caulking, and painting.

-Clare Fellowship Hall HVAC replacement.

-Relocation of the preschool playground to the south side of Elizabeth Hall due to pending Leesville Road Upgrade Project.

-Preschool Clare Hall classrooms, tile floors, replacing carpet.
Franciscan School wireless upgrade.

You have probably noticed the tree in the memorial garden is not doing well. We are treating it and are hopeful that it will return to normal.

The city continues to finish contractual efforts for the Leesville Road Upgrade Project. Latest estimates are for a late autumn beginning. Work has begun relocating buried utilities.

This will be an exciting week coming up as our children prepare to head back to school. The friars along with the teachers and pastoral staff look forward to welcoming
our students this week as Franciscan School begins an
academically challenging and faith-filled academic year.

In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Mark
