Brothers and Sisters,

Congratulations to our parish for the Franciscan School being recognized a Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Thursday, September 15th.  Secretary Duncan noted: “Schools honored with the Blue Ribbon Schools award are committed to academic achievement and to ensuring that students learn and succeed. Their work reflects the conviction that every child has promise and must receive a quality education.”  Franciscan School is an important and vital ministry of the Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi which exists to form  disciples of Jesus Christ.  Beginning with our pre-school celebrating 20 years in 2011-2012, our parish schools provide our children with an opportunity not only for an academically-excellent education, but also,  integrated throughout the curriculum, a faith formation that will serve our students for the rest of their lives. I value the strong partnership with parents, parish and faculty that exists.  The Blue Ribbon recognition is a great tribute to the leadership of Mrs. Jennifer Bigelow, along with the   entire faculty and staff.  Congratulations to all!

This Sunday, 18 September, at 1:00 pm in the Founders Room of Anthony Hall, we will hold a Partners-In-Ministry Forum: Energizing Our Mission, Engaging Our Faith.  All ministry leaders are invited to participate.

Next Saturday morning, 24 September, all parishioners are invited and encouraged to participate in a workshop for the New Roman Missal. Since Easter we’ve included in the bulletin a column talking about the   implementation of the new missal, including vocabulary and some of the theology for the update. This workshop will provide a worthwhile background to the whole nature and beauty of our liturgy, as well as insight into the new Roman Missal.  Please plan on attending.

RSVP to the parish office receptionist 847-8205×0.

You are invited to celebrate the silver jubilee of my Franciscan profession of vows.  There will be an “adult only” parish dinner on Saturday evening 1 October in Clare Fellowship Hall {$50 per person} beginning at 7:00 pm  And also the 11:30 Mass on Sunday 2 October, as we celebrate the Feast of Francis followed by the family friendly parish picnic.  My family is going to be able to join us here in Raleigh, along with longtime friends.  I hope you will be able to participate in the dinner and/or the Eucharist as I give thanks to God for the gift of my vocation as a Franciscan Friar.  It’s hard for me to fathom that most of my priesthood and more than half of my Franciscan life has been spent here at St. Francis of Assisi with you. I am very fortunate indeed!

In the peace of Christ,

Fr. Mark
